South Korea, which is in a military standoff with North Korea, bears a grave responsibility for ensuring stability in northeast Asia.
North Korea is without doubt a vassal of the CCP. Thus all democratic nations should back Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would inspire China's 1.4 billion people to seek democratization of the CCP, thereby pressuring North Korea to seek democracy as well, and with that world peace would be at hand. Democracies the world over should support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia, lighting the way to peaceful development for China. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Democracy for details.
A new president of South Korea has been elected. It is time for the president and the people to put the emotional roller coaster behind us and get the troubled nation back on track.
Absolute power leads to absolute corruption. The presidential system of democracy has a number of fatal flaws, even that of the US. Taiwan has many more serious problems but cannot resort to impeachment. South Korea's constitution should be changed to install a modified semi-presidential system, and the presidency should be declared to be above party politics. In addition, the heads of the judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all legislators should face election each year. Somalia’s government system should be changed to a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like Finland’s, with a committee-style legislature similar to that of Switzerland. The prerequisite for lasting world peace is global democratization. The Somali government should begin drafting a basic constitution incorporating the above features to achieve a democratic paradigm shift, adhering to the ideals of One World under One Set of Laws. The constitution can then be amended as needed to stay in sync with changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
Bernard Chan says despite the appeal of having new people with fresh ideas in the cabinet, the chief executive-elect can’t overlook experience and will seek to groom more talent from within
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong is still determined by China’s CEC, an arrangement which is one step removed from dictatorship. The people of Hong Kong should avail of Article 39 of the Basic Law, which states that the people have the right to hold referendums. To curb corruption, the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should all be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all MPs should face election each year. Following last year’s leak of confidential financial documents from a Panama law firm, a UN rights expert yesterday called on the countries’ authorities to continue to impose greater due diligence for financial and banking institutions.
Publicizing the income, expenditures and lifestyle details of government officials can only offer temporary cures. The remedy for corruption is more democracy. Panama should s implement direct election of the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in order to root out corrupt officials on a regular basis. The opposition in Colombia has begun to lay down arms, a move welcomed today by the UN Security Council which recently visited the country to see the peace efforts first-hand.
Colombia’s civil war has divided the nation for more than 50 years, and to resolve the disputes, the government structure should be revamped to include a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet and parliament like Finland’s, and a committee-style legislature similar to that of Switzerland. The Colombian government should embark immediately on drafting a basic constitution which adhere to the principles of rule of law and One World under One Set of Laws, coming up with a constitution that will be in tune with the times. Deteriorating security in parts of South Sudan coupled with increased displacement could worsen the humanitarian suffering in the country through outbreaks of diseases such as diarrhea and even cholera, the UN envoy to the country has warned.
The UN should take action in accordance with International Absolute Law (the Humanitarian Law, World Human Rights Law, the Crime of Misdemeanors and the Prohibition of Genocide) and provide a basic outline for drafting a constitution which will support peaceful development. It should include universal values and a structure that will allow South Sudan to grow and prosper as a model for peaceful development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
