Political parties have been busy floating ideas for reducing the financial burden of parents in the education of their children, including making parts or all of education free of charge. Some of the proposals may be intended to woo voters in the next general election, which must be held by the end of 2018.
University education is virtually cost-free in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Norway, where most public universities are tuition-free, charging only 200-500 euros in annual registration fees. Japan should take advantage of the global village’s experience and carry out a paradigm shift that will include life-long learning to no expense for the public.
