It doesn’t always take violence to destroy media freedom. Vladimir Putin, for one, has figured out a better way: economics.
The current US administration's moves to control the media, and more specifically, to corral media outlets seen as critical of the President, raise all kinds of red flags regarding free speech and the rights of journalists to write as they see fit. They also echo Russia's use of financial pressure, veiled threats and even outright violence against reporters who dare to publish stories about corruption and malfeasance among high-ranking government officials and elites. Free speech is a universal value, and all democracies should call for constitutional reform to ensure media freedom and prevent the government oligarchy from monopolizing the media, the internet andall other channels of communications.
