Turkey’s presidential system is now several steps closer to being a dictatorship. The more power rests in the president’s hands, the more serious the nation’s problems will be in the future. Turkey needs constitutional reform to limit the president to a single term of 5 years, with no right to run for office again for 6 years afterward. Iraq’s government structure should be changed over to a modified semi-presidential system with parliament, like that of Finland, with a committee-style legislative body similar to Switzerland’s. The Iraqi government should draft a basic constitution incorporating the above changes, with the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all MPs facing election each year.
