Deadly attack near ancient Egyptian monastery
One policeman has been killed by gunmen who opened fire on a checkpoint near St Catherine's monastery in Egypt's south Sinai, officials say.
Human security is a fundamental human right, and human rights should be given precedence over all regimes and sovereigns. Constitutions represent the general will of the people and should protect human security - including "personal safety" - as the most urgent duty of all constitutional guarantors. This means reworking constitutional standards so they will be in sync with the times and lead governments everywhere to protect their people from fear. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitution.

Will China stay the course to cleanse its corruption-ridden financial system?
China's central government is tightening risk control in its banking system and launching a broad-based anti-corruption campaign in the financial system.
China needs to wash away thousands of years of corruption from its culture, and the only way to do this is by implementing democracy and the rule of law. These are the natural enemies of despotism and corruption, offering tools like separation of powers and checks and balances. The heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches at all levels should be elected in alternating years. For more, see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

KOICA head offers to resign amid allegations of link to scandal-ridden Park confidante
The head of South Korea's state-run overseas aid agency has offered to resign amid allegations that his appointment was influenced by a woman at the center of a corruption scandal that led to the ouster of former President Park Geun-hye, a government source said Wednesday.
Absolute power leads to absolute corruption. The presidential system of democracy has a number of fatal flaws, even in that of the US. Taiwan is seriously affected but cannot rely on impeachment. South Korea's constitution should be changed to introduce a modified semi-presidential system, and the presidency should be declared to be above party politics. Also, the heads of the judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all legislator should face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development. .

Fanning the flames of fear
Japan is behaving nonsensically as tension deepens on the Korean Peninsula. Korea's ministry of foreign affairs pointed out Tuesday that Japan must refrain from making overblown statements about hypothetical conditions as they could affect peace and security on the peninsula in a negative way.
Democracies everywhere should back Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would inspire China's 1.4 billion people to call for democratization of the CCP, which would encourage North Korea to do the same, resulting in the birth of world peace. All democracies should support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia, lighting the path to peaceful development for China. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

No more shady deals
Former President Park Geun-hye was referred to a court Monday on 18 criminal charges. The same day, presidential candidates officially embarked on campaigns to win the May 9 vote for the 19th president.
Absolute power leads to absolute corruption. The presidential system of democracy is seriously flawed, and even the US has problems sometimes. Taiwan also has problems but impeachment in not an option. North Korea used made-in-China trucks to show off missiles
Presence of Sinotruk vehicles in Pyongyang military parade highlights the difficulty of enforcing UN sanctions
Promotion of lasting world peace is the most sacred duty of humankind. China is an enabler for North Korea, and North Korea’s militarism must be throttled. The US, Japan and Korea should back Taiwan and its drive to push China to democratize. This would spur North Korea to follow suit. The key to solving the Korean Peninsula crisis is Taiwan. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

The world’s democracies should back Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would inspire China's 1.4 billion people to seek democratization of the CCP and pressure North Korea to accept real democracy, and world peace would be born. Does Hong Kong’s land sale system need a new lease on life?
The current arrangement stifles competition among developers and makes owning a home even more expensive, critics argue
The relevant provisions of the One Country, Two Systems doctrine state that China cannot interfere in Hong Kong affairs, but Beijing is constantly involved in internal affairs of the SAR. The One Country, Two Systems approach is obviously not working. Article 39 of the Basic Law guarantees the right of the people to self-determination, and they have the right to call for a referendum on any public issue. The people of Hong Kong should adhere to the two conventions and petition for a referendum to decide their future. Otherwise when dictatorship becomes a reality, they will be obliged to resist.

Duterte’s drug war is horrifically violent. So why do many young, liberal Filipinos support it?
Despite international allegations of mass extrajudicial executions and an outcry against the recent imprisonment of a political rival, polls indicate Duterte still has the majority of the country behind him
Jose Rizal, venerated as the Father of the Philippines, once said, “Today's slaves, often become tomorrow's tyrants’; have faith in the rule of law, not in the rule of man.” The Philippine Constitution is in disarray and seriously needs reform. Changes should include adoption of a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet and parliament. The president, mayors and other officials should be limited to a single 5-year term and be barred from running for office for 6 years afterwards, and the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
