The relevant provisions of the One Country, Two Systems doctrine state that China cannot interfere in Hong Kong affairs, but Beijing is constantly involved in internal affairs of the SAR. The One Country, Two Systems approach is obviously not working. Article 39 of the Basic Law guarantees the right of the people to self-determination, and they have the right to call for a referendum on any public issue. The people of Hong Kong should adhere to the two conventions and petition for a referendum to decide their future. Otherwise when dictatorship becomes a reality, they will be obliged to resist.

Jose Rizal, venerated as the Father of the Philippines, once said, “Today's slaves, often become tomorrow's tyrants’; have faith in the rule of law, not in the rule of man.” The Philippine Constitution is in disarray and seriously needs reform. Changes should include adoption of a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet and parliament. The president, mayors and other officials should be limited to a single 5-year term and be barred from running for office for 6 years afterwards, and the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years.
