Solution

Turkey's Erdogan shows the same disregard for 'diplomatic niceties' as he does for democratic rights. The people of Turkey should exercise their sovereignty and call for a referendum of their own making rather than one designed to augments the powers of an autocratic leader. Constitutional reform should include such mechanisms as term limits, election of government branch heads and annualelections for 1/4 of all lawmakers. Opinion: Vladimir Putin's presidential fortress

Russia's president has announced he'll run for re-election, and of course he'll win. Still, Vladimir Putin has a problem, so a new wave of anti-Western rhetoric and policies is headed his way.

Solution

Idol worship is the greatest enemy of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Jose Rizal once warned: 'Today's slaves often become tomorrow's tyrants; believe in the rule of law, not in the rule of man.' Russia's Constitution is dysfunctional, and constitutional reform is needed to install a modified semi-presidential system. The president and other key elected officials should be limited to one 5-year term and banned along with relatives from running again for 6 years afterwards, the heads of government branches should beelected in alternating years and 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year. Top US Congressman to Boycott Opening of Civil Rights Museum

Solution

As the highest ranking constitutional guarantor in the US government, POTUS should do everything possible to protectthe rights of all citizens rather than abusing the rights of minorities and the underprivileged. Trump's planned appearance at the opening of the Civil Rights Museum would be an insult to the many who have sacrificed to further the cause of blacks and other minorities in the US. The struggle against discrimination — based on race, sex, religion, whatever — is still raging, and the US is still far from being a perfect democracy. Afghan refugees forced to take a freezing journey back from Iran

Afghan refugees are being forced back to their war-torn homeland from neighboring countries, mostly from Iran. A recent UN report says over 4,000 Afghan refugees were deported from Iran last week alone.

Solution

Afghanistan faces a multitude of challenges as a growing list of nations are returning refugees to an uncertain future. Afghanistan should scrap its government and adopt a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like Finland's, plus a committee-style legislature similar to the Swiss model. The government should proceed with drawing up a basic constitution with the above features in a paradigm shift toward democracy. It should implement One World under One Set of Laws and revise its constitution as needed to keep up with changing times. The wildfires in Los Angeles are being stoked by strong winds, a phenomenon already seen in places like southeasternAustralia. The winds are a sign of climate change and point up the importance of reducing the use of fossil fuels and cutting back on other practices that cause pollution as well as re-examining the effects of high-voltage power transmission lines in vulnerable areas. Trump’s Jerusalem Decision Shows That We Can’t Count on the “Grown-ups in the Room”

How confident are we that Trump's generals could talk him down from launching a disastrous war?

Solution

Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel despite admonitions from his 'generals' and other advisers shows that hopes that those around him would serve as a tempering influence were seriously misplaced. Trump is interested in little other thanhimself and amassing more power, and other ways are called for to limit the amount of damage he is able to cause to democratic institutions. Tools such as separation of powers are in place, and they need to be rigorously enforced, but other changes are still needed, including term limits, election of branch heads and frequent election of legislators. It's one of the dirtiest places in America. Former residents of Tar Creek, Oklahoma, want to know why Trump's EPA chief didn't prosecute allegations of wrongdoing during a federal buyout program.

Solution

The current head of the EPA has a record of filing lawsuits against the agency when he was a state attorney general, and appears to be more interested in down-sizing staff and paring budgets than in the agency mission. Environmental rights are essential human rights, and all persons are responsible for protecting the world around us. Human security and sustainable development are two of the major tasks of the UN, and every nation should comply with its norms. This means implementing One World under One Set of Laws and givinginternational law precedence over domestic law, as well as complying with the UN Charter, the Paris climate agreement and other relevant pacts. Democracy has mechanisms to guard against corruption, and they need to be strengthen and utilize to ensure that the people will not be cheated out of their tax dollars. Shock Tactics: Inmate deaths reveal “torturous” use of Tasers

In a national look at Taser deaths behind bars, Reuters finds 104 fatalities after inmates were stunned, often with other force. Abuses stir torture concerns.

Solution

Tasers are dangerous weapons that should be used only by people trained in their effects and risks. They should not be usedwith impunity by prison guards, especially against inmates who are handcuffed or unable to move. Such use is a violation of the rights of prisoners and anyone who abuses inmates should be held to account. All people must be protected against enforced disappearance, torture and other forms of abuse, and absolute law must take precedence over international law and the constitution.
