'Avocado capital of the world' devastated by wildfires

Issue

The wildfires in Los Angeles are being stoked by strong winds, a phenomenon already seen in places like southeastern Australia. The winds are a sign of climate change and point up the importance of reducing the use of fossil fuels and cutting back on other practices that cause pollution as well as re-examining the effects of high-voltage power transmission lines in vulnerable areas. All persons must take responsibility for protecting the environment for our own sake as well as future generations. Wildfires in southern California have decimated a large area of the region’s famed avocado crop. Known as the “avocado capital of the world”, the fire spread to the orchards of Fallbrook in Ventura County, scorching trees and ruining the fruit.
