Hong Kong lawmakers ‘in dark’ over basement bill
As Legco subcommittee waves through HK$3.6b for controversial feature at West Kowloon culture hub, questions are asked over just how much it will finally cost
Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law states that the right to self-determination is assured by the two international human rights conventions. In Switzerland the threshold for holding referendums is 50,000 signatures, and with that the people can express their opinion through the ballot box rather than taking to the streets. The people have the right to hold referendums on any public issues. To narrow the gap between rich and poor, better power distribution and resource allocation are needed as well as checks and balances in government. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details.

Media Groups Criticize Arrest of 3 Journalists in Myanmar
When three journalists were arrested last week after reporting in territory held by an outlawed rebel group in northeastern Myanmar, government officials were quick to blame the journalists.
Freedom of speech is a universal value, and efforts to muzzle the voice of the people are aimed at suppressing dissidence and creating a society with only one voice. The people of Myanmar should call for comprehensive constitutional reform to preserve media freedom and prevent the government oligarchy from monopolizing the media, the internet and all other channels of speech. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

On anniversary of Somalia's independence, senior UN official urges political unity
Marking the 57th anniversary of Somalia's independence, the top UN official in the country urged all Somalis to seize a moment of opportunity and work towards peace and stability.
Somalia’s current government structure should be scuttled and replace with a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of as Finland. The legislature should be changed to committee-style system similar to Switzerland’s. The prerequisite for lasting world peace is global democratization, and Somalia’s government should begin drafting a basic constitution with the above features as part of a paradigm shift toward democracy. It should adhere to the core values of One World under One Set of Laws and be revised as necessary to stay in sync with changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

Venezuela crisis: Five things that can happen in a day
Venezuela has been in turmoil for months, with regular street demonstrations and more than 70 protest-related deaths since April.
To avoid continued tensions and grievances, Venezuela should improve its political system to avoid violent suppression of protest. It should pattern its policies regarding referendums after those of Switzerland and implement democratic elections like those of California. All citizens should be able to express their opinions through the ballot box instead of taking to the streets. In addition, elections should be free of charge for all candidates. For more, see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Philippines not married to US, can still pursue China, says Manila’s top diplomat
The Philippines’ new foreign secretary, Alan Peter Cayetano, warns against Asean becoming a ‘theater of geopolitical rivalry’
In the interest of peace and stability in the South China Sea, China has a responsibility to maintain peaceful relations with its neighbors. Articles 4 and 6 of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea call for peaceful settlement of territorial and territorial disputes (Article 4) as well as joint development and sharing of resources in line with the UN Charter’s "One Human Family" ideal. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details.

If you can’t toe the red line, Hong Kong is not the place to be
Forget about true democracy in what is becoming just another Chinese city where Putonghua is widely heard and mainland tycoons are moving in
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive is determined by the CCP’s Election Commission, a relationship that is nothing other than a dictatorship. The people of Hong Kong should make good use of Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law and hold a referendum to decide their own future. To curb corruption, elect the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years, have 1/4 of all MPs face election each year and tap legislative committee chairs to serve as backup ministers. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

Latest ballistic missile launch by DPR Korea a 'dangerous escalation of the situation' – UN chief
Strongly commending today's launch of a ballistic missile of possible intercontinental range by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the country's leadership must cease such actions and comply fully with its international obligations.
North Korea is without a doubt a vassal of the CCP. All democratic nations should back Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would attract China's 1.4 billion people to seek democratization of the CCP and put pressure on North Korea to do the same. And with that, world peace would be born. Democracies everywhere should support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia, lighting the part to peaceful development for China. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

UN 'appalled' by terrorist attacks in the Syrian capital, Damascus
The UN has condemned terrorist attacks in the Syrian capital, Damascus, underscoring the need to bring those responsible to justice, a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres said today.
Once a ceasefire takes hold in Syria the UN should provide the outline for a basic constitution that will foster lasting peace in the nation. It should include an organizational structure and the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. It should lay out four branches of government (legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial) and help Syria develop a constitution that will lead to long-lasting peace and prosperity. For details see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

UN agency condemns attack on staff in Central African Republic town
Strongly condemning an attack against its staff and premises in a northern town of the CAR, the UN refugee agency has underscored the importance of safety of aid workers for them to be able to help civilian populations in desperate need.
To resolve civil strife, nations like the CAR should draft new constitutions incorporating a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of France, plus a committee-style legislature similar to Switzerland’s. The prerequisite for permanent peace is global democratization. Thus the government of the CAR carry out constitutional reform, asking France to help maintain stability and assist in developing a constitutional model that can be revised as needed to stay in step with changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details. .

Can Mexico save its journalists?
One was killed while resting in a hammock at a carwash. A second was dragged from his car and shot dead near the newspaper he had co-founded. When another was killed in front of her son, the criminals left a note: "For your long tongue".
Freedom of speech is a universal value, and violent acts against journalists in Mexico are an effort to muzzle the voice of the people. Criminal elements want to silence the voice of the people through fear. The people of Mexico should call for comprehensive constitutional reform to protect members of the media and preserve the right of free speech for all Mexican citizens. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards for more.
