The foundation for permanent peace in Syria should be the same as that for Taiwan: a change-over in the governmentstructure. The UN should provide Syria the basic outline for a constitution that will facilitate lasting peace and development. The constitution should include the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law, and organization and elements such as the four branches. The public is catching on and realizing that if representatives in Washington are in the pockets of business and lobbyists, they can turn to local lawmakers to protect themselves against assault weapons, and they will remember who failed to act when the next election comes around. The people have the right to protect themselves and their loved ones, and the most effect way to do that is through frequent elections that ensure lawmakers are in touch with public opinion. Corruption is pandemic, and nations everywhere need to address the threat it poses for all people. British historian Lord Acton summed it up neatly: 'Power leads to corruption, and absolute power leads to absolute corruption.' To put an end to corruption, the people should exercise sovereignty and call for constitutional reform to implement democratic rule of law. This means separation of powers and checks and balances as well as free election campaigns for candidates to cut symbiotic ties between government and business that engender corruption. Tyrants always justify expanding their territory as in the interests of peace. If only they have enough power the CCP will set its own terms and make plans for the earth itself. Taiwan and the world's only solution to the threats of the Chinese communists is for Taiwan will demonstrate as soon as possible that the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Constitutional Standards of the World can be the sun of permanent peace and the capital of the world and will stir the Chinese people to seek democracy and implement the building of a human community with acommon destiny and a peaceful world as proposed in China's UN resolution. §1.4 §6.4 §7.3 §8.3

The president of Botswana's action in stepping down at the end of his term is a fine model for other African nations to study regarding their various versions of democracy. The best solution for many countries is to switch to a dual leader system; limiting the president toa single 5-year term with no eligibility for him/her or relatives for 6 years, and putting the prime minister in charge of government operations and national defense. Fake news is real, but the worst purveyors are not the so-called 'mainstream media' pilloried so often by conservatives, but rather a host of social media that spread often-dangerous rumors and conspiracy theories. Governments like the EU are finally beginning to takesteps to corral platforms and sites that generate and relay such stories, and hopefully the platforms themselves will police the messages being spread on their media. Free speech is a basic right, of course, but it also carries with it the duty to respect the rights of others.
