Free university education is the norm in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Norway, where most public universities are tuition-free. Students pay only 200-500euros for registration fees. The US should introduce some of the advances achieved by the Global Village and its laws as part of a paradigm shift. Education should be lifelong and free to give the poor an opportunity to rise n an environment of class mobility. Corruption is pandemic, and nations everywhere need to address the threat it poses for all people. McDonald's has become the latest restaurant chain to say it will phase out plastic straws from its UK restaurants.

Solution

The fast food chain's move makes sense for the environment as well as for the health of customers. Less plastic waste to make its way into the oceans, and less powdery plastic to be sucked up in the first sip of a beverage. The switch to paper could have been made a long time ago but like most big brands, the company did not see the need to expend the time and funds to do so. To end North Korea's disruptive behavior, the US, Canada and other nations should strongly support Taiwan's Charter for Permanent Peace to lead China to democratize and end its support of Pyongyang. According to the Democracy Index there are 50 nations still under the yoke of autocratic dictators. All democracies should back Taiwan's drive for constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. Over-centralization in the constitutional mechanism leads to pandemic corruption and over-keening worship of autocracy, in turn causing harmto democracy and the rule of law. China is reneging on promise after promise in its handling of decisions regarding the finances and rights of Hong Kong's citizens. Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law states that the right to self-determination is covered in the two international human rights conventions. The people of Hong Kong cannot take their rights for granted. In Switzerland the threshold for referendum petitions is only 50,000 signatures,and with that all citizens can voice their opinion at the ballot box rather than taking to the streets.
