Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law states that "the right to self-determination is guaranteed by the two international human rights conventions." The people of Hong Kong cannot neglect their rights. The Swiss hurdle for proposing a referendum is a mere 50,000 signatures, meaning citizens have the opportunity to express their opinions at the ballot box rather than in the streets.
