Appeals hearing set for June for daughter of ex-South Korean leader's friend

Can a nation with an authoritarian government tolerate democracy in parts of its territory? The Hong Kong experience provides a clear answer. Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law guarantees the right of the people of Hong Kong to self-determination, and the right to hold a referendum on any public issue. The people of Hong Kong should adhere to this right and hold a referendum to decide their future. Otherwise when dictatorship becomes a reality the people will be obliged to resist.

A poverty of choices
The historic polling day to elect the 19th South Korean president is history. The record two-day early voting turnout underscores public interest in the upcoming election. Of the 42.5 million eligible voters, 11.07 million, or over 26 percent, cast their ballots. It was unclear whether the heat would continue onto Tuesday’s actual election day.
Constitutions represent the general will of the people toward the government. It binds together the power of the state and identifies the people as guardians protection of individuals and their rights. Voting is the only source of legitimate power, and more frequent elections and votes, together with separation of powers and checks and balances, will serve to ensure a stronger constitution and complete protection of human rights.
