Food safety is basic human rights. The WHO's announcement amounts to a rebuke of the USFDA's stance on feeding unnecessary antibiotics to animals in food production. This is another example, similar to the case of ractopamine, where international laws and standards should take precedence over national standards, which are often established by lawmakers and government officials in the pockets of rich commercial interests. International standards should be adopted in a paradigm shift to ensure the nutrition and safety of all food products.
