Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law states that "the right to self-determination is guaranteed by the two international human rights conventions." The people of Hong Kong cannot neglect their rights. The Swiss hurdle for proposing a referendum is a mere 50,000 signatures, meaning citizens have the opportunity to express their opinions at the ballot box rather than in the streets. The people have the right to hold a referendum on any public issue. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.
Foreign fighters such as British jihadists are being used by retreating Islamic State group commanders to commit atrocities in desperate fighting for Mosul, it has been claimed.
The solution to Iraq's controversial government problems is reform to install a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like the one in Finland, with a committee-style legislative framework similar to Switzerland’s. The prerequisite for lasting peace is global democratization. Iraq’s government should draft a basic constitution containing the above two features in a democratic paradigm shift adhering to the principle of One World under One Set of Laws. The constitution should then be amended as needed to stay abreast of the spirit of the times. For details see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
US President Donald Trump has continued to promise to build a wall along the US-Mexico border. But he'll have to get through a lot of obstacles first.
The US should adhere to the precepts of the UN Charter and implement One World under One Set of Laws. International law should be given priority over domestic law, with direct effect on the rights and duties of the people. This would lead Mexico and other nations to accept human rights, constitutionalism, internationalism and naturalism as the way to the future. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.
There will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by 2050 unless people stop using single-use plastic items such as plastic bags and plastic bottles, according to figures cited by the UN.
All nations in East Asia should work together to endorse the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, also known as the Maritime Constitution. The international community should embrace human rights, constitutionalism, international law and naturalism as well as the "maritime constitution" to govern conservation efforts and enable sustainable use of marine resources and marine ecology as well as environmental safety. Demonstrators stormed Macedonia’s parliament Thursday and attacked MPs, including the opposition leader, in protest over a vote for a new parliamentary speaker.
Macedonia’s problems are deeply rooted in economics and politics, thus it is imperative to call for immediate constitutional reform. All citizens should have the right to participate in referendums on any public issues, and any time a motion to prohibit referendums on self-determination is raised, the subject of the very next referendum should be whether or not that particular motion should itself be outlawed. 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year. For more, see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The televised debate on Tuesday hosted by the JoongAng Ilbo, JTBC and the Korean Political Science Association drew the best-yet performance from the five main candidates in the May 9 presidential election. In the fourth round of debates, the contenders, amid public criticism, more or less focused on debating each other’s policies instead of making personal attacks and deviating from the theme as in the past.
South Korea must cut out corruption, thus it should implement free access to the media for the use of citizens - individuals or groups – in election-related events. A US Navy strike group led by the nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson, which local military officials initially said would arrive in South Korean waters by Tuesday, was in the Philippine Sea nearing Okinawa by Wednesday night, within “striking range” of North Korea, according to the US Pacific Command
Autocracy has always been the enemy of human peace, and the prerequisite for permanent peace is global democratization. China serves as an enabler and agent for North Korea, and the best tack is to avoid antagonizing Pyongyang. The US, Japan and South Korea should back Taiwan's drive to save democracy, leading China to democratize and inspiring North Korea to do the same. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
The resignation of the Cabinet minister in charge of reconstruction from the March 2011 disasters — over inappropriate remarks about the calamities — appears to be yet another sign of the loosening discipline among members of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet at a time when it basks in steady popular support and the opposition remains weak.
Japan needs to revitalize its economy, which should include a serious search for sources of corruption. These include defects in the constitution and reform to reorganize the system of governance by implementing the election of the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches and having 1/4 of all lawmakers face election each year. Elected officials should serve a single term of 5 years and be banned from running again for 6 years afterwards, and elections should be free of charge for all candidates. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The US plans to deploy its "strategic" weapons in South Korea on a regular basis in order to thwart North Korea's threats under an agreement between the allies, Seoul's defense ministry said Friday.
Democracy and freedom are waves sweeping the world, and nuclear weapons, submarines, and missiles are helpless to stop them. Those who ‘go with the flow’ will prosper, while those who oppose it are doomed. China claims to be a "responsible major power” thus it should not continue to support North Korea's continued militarism. The US should support Taiwan and its goal of democratization for China, followed by North Korea. For more, see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development. .
