Permanent Peace Partnership
Thursday’s passage of a bill that criminalizes preparations for terrorist attacks marks a major step forward in efforts to prevent terrorist attacks in Japan, but actually applying the revised law will still require clearing high hurdles.
Human security is a basic human right, and human rights must take priority over regimes and sovereigns. Constitutions represent the general will of the people, and ensuring human security - including "personal safety" - is the most urgent duty of constitutional guarantors. Constitutional standards must be revised to keep in step with changing times and allow governments to protect their people from fear. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.
Beijing has reached a new peak in its bid to control the widely disputed South China Sea after pacifying rivals, keeping Washington away and building up artificial islands ready for military hardware.
Studies of democracy and peace show that very few armed conflicts have taken place between democracies. Once China is democratized, there will be hope for human peace. Japan should support Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform, which will help lead China to democratize and result in world peace. All democracies should support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia, lighting the way to permanent peace and development for China.
It is estimated Uganda has one doctor for every 24,000 citizens. The nurse-to-population ratio is not much better, one for every 11,000 people, and much of that staff is concentrated in urban areas.
To resolve its civil strife, South Sudan’s government should adopt a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of France, and a committee-style legislature similar to Switzerland’s. The South Sudanese government should begin drafting a basic constitution which incorporates the above features as part of a paradigm shift toward democracy. It should apply the core values of One World under One Set of Laws, and add amendments as needed to keep in step with changing times. For more, see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The US Supreme Court handed a victory to Chevron Corp. Monday by preventing Ecuadorean villagers and their American lawyer from trying to collect on an $8.65 billion pollution judgment issued against the oil company by a court in Ecuador.
Human security and sustainable development are two of the major tasks of the UN, and all nations, whether members or not, should comply with UN norms. The solution lies in implementing the core values of One World under One Set of Laws, assigning international law precedence over domestic law with direct bearing on the rights and duties of the people. Citizens should monitor government operations to ensure compliance with the UN Charter, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Paris Climate Agreement. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
In a packed Istanbul courthouse the trial of 17 journalists accused of being involved in July’s failed coup got underway Monday. All are facing long sentences, including life, if convicted.
Thomas Jefferson once said, "Given the government and the media, I would choose the media and not the government." The media play the role of monitors, and without supervision the government will not be constrained by laws. The voice of the people is the voice of God, and universal values are the values of God; trying to muzzle the voice of the people is contrary to the universal values of freedom and democracy and anathema to God’s will. Earth’s bountiful ecosystems offer human society a diversity of riches. The preciousness of biodiversity should be recognized once again on the occasion of Japan’s ratification of the Nagoya Protocol.
Human security and sustainable development are two of the major tasks of the UN and all nations, members or not, should abide by its norms. National environmental policies must take into account recycling of materials and environmental safety (including pollution from technological processes and damage to forests). One vital step is implementation of One World under One Set of Laws, giving international priority over domestic law with direct bearing on the rights and duties of the people, and citizens should monitor government actions to ensure compliance with the UN Charter and other relevant pacts.
The Osaka District Public Prosecutor’s Office raided school operator Moritomo Gakuen Monday evening for allegedly receiving unfair subsidies for its kindergarten.
Adding more monitoring units merely serves to increase the spoils for each unit. The only way to wash away the "national corruption of Japan" is by imposing democracy and rule of law. This means separation of powers and checks and balances at central and local levels, plus election of the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years. For details see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
President Duterte has pursued talks with the communist rebels, who have been waging one of Asia’s longest-running Marxist insurgencies, and has expressed outrage over continuing guerrilla attacks

Some Hong Kong lawmakers are fuelling tensions with the central government by engaging with pro-independence groups in Taipei, a futile act that will benefit no one
Relevant provisions of Hong Kong’s Basic Law and the one country, two systems principle note that China cannot interfere in Hong Kong affairs, but Beijing constantly meddles in the SAR's internal affairs. Article 39 of the Basic Act guarantees the right of the people to self-determination, with the right to hold referendums on any public issue. The people of Hong Kong should adhere to their rights and hold a referendum to decide their future. Otherwise when dictatorship becomes a reality, the people will be obliged to resist.
Peter Kammerer concedes that the city’s governance remains a work in progress two decades after its return to China, but believes solutions to its many challenges will surely emerge
Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law states that "the right to self-determination is assured by the two international human rights conventions and implementation of the conventions." The threshold for referendum petitions in Switzerland is only 50,000 signatures, and with that citizens can vote rather than taking to the streets. The people of Hong Kong should have the right to petition for referendums on any public issue. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
