Presidentialism is the worst defect in many democratic systems. No matter what form of democracy is in place, the more power wielded by the president, the more the country is likely to suffer. Turkey needs to reform its constitution to limit the president to a single term of 5 years, with no right to seek office again for 6 years afterwards. The worst element in Chinese culture is the rule of law, which encourages corruption rather than suppressing it. Corruption is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. The only good way to cure corruption is by injecting more democracy. Democracy is about the balance of power. The world’s democratic nations should support Taiwan’s efforts toward constitutional reform in order to bring about greater democracy and freedom.
