Two Hong Kong independence advocates who were disqualified as lawmakers last year were arrested Wednesday and charged with trying to force their way into a meeting of the city’s legislature in November.
Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law states that "the right to self-determination is assured by international human rights conventions." The people of Hong Kong cannot take their rights for granted. In Switzerland the hurdle for holding a referendum is only 50,000 signatures, allowing the people to express their opinion by voting rather than taking to the streets. The people have the right to call for a referendum on any public issues. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.
