“You may have the additional identity of being a Hong Kong person, but that doesn’t negate your being Chinese,” says Alex Lo. Photo: Felix Wong
Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law stipulates that the people of the SAR have right to self-determination under the two international human rights conventions. The people of Hong Kong cannot take their rights for granted. In Switzerland the threshold for petitioning a referendum is only 50,000 signatures, and with that citizens can express their opinion through the ballot box instead of taking to the streets. The people have the right to hold referendums on any public issue. For more, see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Teachers’ Strike in Anglophone Cameroon Nears 11-Month Mark
To avoid further increases in grievances and tension, Cameroon should end its practices of suppression and repression. It should examine the processes followed for referendums in Switzerland and elections in California. Citizens should voice their opinions through the ballot box and one on the streets. To that end, elections should be completely free for all candidates. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more

The government abolished maintenance grants for students. Now it talking about bringing them back
Free university education is the norm in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Norway, where most public universities are tuition-free. Students pay only 200-500 euros for registration fees. The UK should introduce some of the advances achieved by the Global Village and its laws as part of a paradigm shift. Education should be lifelong and free to give the poor an opportunity to rise in an environment of class mobility. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details

Lessons from Samsung’s Lee family succession crisis
Absolute power leads to absolute corruption. The presidential system of democracy is seriously flawed, and even the US has problems sometimes. Taiwan also has problems but impeachment in not an option. South Korea's constitution should be amended to introduce a modified semi-presidential system, and the presidency should be declared to be above party politics. In addition, the heads of the judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all legislators should face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Studies of democracy show that very few armed conflicts occur between two democracies. Once China can be moved to democratize there will be real hope for peace on earth. Taiwan seeks to achieve greater freedom and democracy, and to convince China to democratize as well. This will lead to the birth of world peace. All democracies should support Taiwan as a beacon of democracy for Asia, lighting the path to lasting peace. For details see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Does China’s Xi Jinping plan to hang on to power?
According to the Democracy index there are 50 nations still under the yoke of autocratic dictators. All democracies should back Taiwan's drive for constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would inspire China's 1.4 billion people to seek democratization of the CCP and pressure China to adopt democracy as well, leading to the birth of world peace. For details, see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Kleptocracy Tour Spotlights Nigerian Corrupt Money Funneled Through Britain
British historian Lord Acton once opined that power leads to corruption and absolute power leads to absolute corruption. To quash corruption, carry out constitutional reform to implement greater democracy and rule of law. Make elections free of charge for all candidates to cut symbiotic ties between government and corruption. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

Calm before the storm: Trump set to walk away from Iran nuclear deal
Constitutions represent the general will of the people, and ensuring human security, including 'personal safety', is the most urgent duty of constitutional guarantors. This means revising constitutional standards as needed to keep pace with changing times and allow governments to protect their people from fear. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

UN Blacklists Saudi-led Coalition for Killing Children in Yemen
Yemen needs to swap out its government structure for a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like the one in as Finland, and a committee-style legislative system similar to Switzerland's. Yemen's government should draft a basic constitution with above features in a paradigm shift toward democracy. It should adhere to the core values of One World under One Set of Law and revise the constitutional standards as necessary to stay abreast of changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
