Trump's Jerusalem Plan Is a Deadly Provocation

The decision to recognize the city as Israel's capital increases the odds of violence because it deepens Palestinian despair.

Donald Trump has ignored the advice of his staff and moved to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The shift is a response to pressure from conservative Jews in the US and could very well spark violence against American interests and even US citizens. Trump needs to take a long look at the risks involved in moving the embassy and rescind his act to do so. As President his duties include protecting the rights of all citizens to worship as they please; this also means respecting the things that they hold sacred: in this case land seen as holy ground by both Jews and Muslims. Elected representatives who flaunt the law should be sentenced to carry out public service, it might help them understand who they are supposed to be serving as lawmakers. The US has a real gun problem, and it is not going to be solved until the NRA and gun aficionados are prevented from interfering in the American political process. The 2nd Amendment is a valuable part of the constitution, but it should not be abused.The solution to gun violence lies in truer democracy. The president and key officials should serve one 5-year term, the heads of government branches should be elected and 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year, all so that the people will be a viable third force in government. This week will see 230 warplanes, from both the US and South Korean Air Forces, fly over eight US and South Korean military bases.

North Korea is obviously being backed by a major power. The US and other nations should support Taiwan's call for constitutional reform to lead China to democratize, which would pressure North Korea to follow suit and drop its nuclear weapons program. As Emmanuel Kant once noted, 'The pursuit of permanent peace is the highest goal of reason and a moral obligation.' Rather than goading the Pyongyang regime, the US should ratchet back its rhetoric and seek a peaceful end to the tensions on the Korean peninsula.
