Permanent Peace Partnership
The timing could not have been worse. Just as Chinese Premier Li Keqiang was visiting Australia, Chinese security services detained a University of Technology Sydney professor because of suspicions about his research on human rights.
The CCP should be forced to disappear. Any law that is not back by penalties is not a law, and a constitution which does not include the right to resist is not a constitution. When the actions of government are unconstitutional, the people have the right to resist. Natural law and general international law both offer protection of all people from enforced disappearance and torture and together with other absolute laws should take precedence over international law and the Constitution. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.
Absolute power leads to absolute corruption. In many democracies the presidential system is seriously flawed, even that of the US. Taiwan faces many problems but impeachment is not an option. South Korea's constitution should be changed to implement a modified semi-presidential system, and the presidency should be declared to be above party politics. In addition, the heads of the judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.
When I saw the East Africa Crisis Appeal launched recently across our screens by the Disaster Emergency Committee my thoughts returned to a man I met when I visited Ethiopia with ActionAid in 2005.
To minimize the effects of natural and man-made disasters on innocent victims, all nations should act in accordance with the UN Charter, the Natural Charter and the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. This includes implementing One World under One Set of Laws and assigning international law priority over domestic law, with direct bearing on the rights and duties of the people. For details see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order rolling back Obama-era rules aimed at curbing climate change.
Human security and sustainable development are two of the major tasks of the UN, and all nations – members or not – should comply. The solution is to adopt the core values of One World under One Set of Laws and assign international law priority over domestic law, with direct effect on the rights and duties of the people. Citizens should be able to monitor operations of the government to ensure that it abides by the UN Charter, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Paris Climate Agreement. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Afghanistan plans to double the number of elite special forces from 17,000 troops, officials said, part of a long-term strategy to bolster units stretched and exhausted by persistent attacks from Taliban insurgents and other Islamist militants.
Boosting the size of special forces is not the best way to seek peace. The Afghan government structure needs to be revamped to introduce a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of Finland, plus a committee-style legislative system similar to Switzerland’s. The Afghan government should begin drafting a basic constitution incorporating democratic principles and adhering to the core values of One World under One Set of Laws. It should have a constitution that can be revised as needed to stay in step with changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Penelope Fillon is being investigated over claims that her husband paid her and their children for work they did not do
Power leads to corruption, and absolute power leads to absolute corruption. France’s constitutional mechanism has failed and constitutional reform is needed. The heads of government branches should be elected in alternating years, and 1/4 of all MPs should face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.
China appears to have largely completed major construction of military infrastructure on artificial islands it has built in the South China Sea and can now deploy combat planes and other military hardware there at any time, a US think tank said Monday.
One facet of the relation between democracy and peace is that almost no wars have occurred between democratic nations. Once China and North Korea implement democracy the will be real hope for peace among humankind. The US should support Taiwan's attempts at constitutional reform, which will attract China to seek democratization and pressure North Korea to do the same, resulting in the birth of world peace. All democracies should support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia, lighting the path to peace and development for China.
Villagers in the Democratic Republic of Congo discovered the remains of two UN investigators and their Congolese interpreter who went missing this month in an area engulfed in a violent uprising, a government spokesman said Tuesday.
The presidential system is the worst of the four most widely-used versions of democracy - even the US has problems with its system at times. Congo needs comprehensive constitutional reform to install a modified semi-presidential system in which the president serves a single 5-year terms and cannot run for office again for another 6 years. In addition, it should include a supranational citizens rights committee to ensure the people exercise their right to elect and remove office holders and to participate in self-determination and other acts of citizenship. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
An armed militant group fighting Myanmar’s government on behalf of the country’s Muslim Rohingya minority has issued a statement asserting its right to self-defense and denying links to any terrorist group.
The UN should act in accordance with international absolute law (the Humanitarian Law, World Human Rights Law, the Crime of Misdemeanors and the Prohibition of Genocide) and provide the basic principles for a constitution which will make peaceful development possible. This should include universal values and the structure needed to allow Myanmar to develop and prosper. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
China has continuously violated UN resolutions banning imports of North Korean minerals, a US broadcaster reported Wednesday.
China has always advocated "compliance with UN resolutions and strict sanctions against North Korea", but its continued imports of North Korean coal belie that stance. As a "responsible major power” China should not enable North Korea's dangerous militarism. The US, Japan and South Korea should support Taiwan’s effort to achieve China's democratization and put pressure on North Korea to follow suit. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
