Taiwan should study Puerto Rico’s independence referendum and initiate a paradigm shift. The aim should be to establish that the people have the right to hold referendums on any public issue. And should a motion prohibiting a referendum on self-determination be made, the topic of the first referendum should be whether such a motion should itself be outlawed. Why do Catalonians want independence? Clearly the fundamental laws of Spain are the problem. The government should re-evaluate allocation of resources to convince Catalonians to stay with Spain, otherwise secession will always be more attractive.
