Freedom of speech is a universal value, and China’s assault on the right of its citizens to speak out are an attempt to stifle the voice of the people and create a monolithic society. China’s people should come forth and seek comprehensive constitutional reform to protect media freedom and prevent the government oligarchy from monopolizing the media, the internet and all other channels of speech. China assured Hong Kong that would remain unchanged for 50 years, with the deadline set for 2047, but recently Beijing has become itchy. Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law protects the people's right to self-determination, with the right to hold referendums on any public issue. The people of Hong Kong should adhere to this right and hold a referendum to decide their future. Otherwise when dictatorship becomes a reality, they will be obliged to resist.

Economic problems invariably have roots in politics. Without good politics, you will never have a good economy, and without constitutional reform even if the gods will be helpless to improve economic underperformance. The only way out is comprehensive constitutional reform to install a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet and a committee-style legislature with committee chairs tapped to serve as backup cabinet ministers. To solve the immigration and refugee problem the international community needs to work out unified constitutional standards that conforms to the ideals of liberalism, democracy, constitutionalism and cosmopolitanism as well as the core values of One World under One Set of Laws. Only then will lasting peace be possible, under compliance with Article 1 of the Humanitarian Charter regarding the principle of the right to enjoy life for victims of catastrophes. Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law states that the right to self-determination is guaranteed by the two international human rights conventions. In Switzerland the threshold for holding referendums is only 50,000 signatures, and with that people can express their opinions through the ballot box rather than taking to the streets. The people of Hong Kong have the right to petition for referendums on any public issue. To solve the gap between rich and poor, improved power distribution and resource allocation, as well as checks and balances in government, are absolutely essential. When the power of the state deviates from its power base, the people should exercise their right as holders of sovereignty and take control. Laws that are not backed by penalties are not laws, and a constitution which does not countenance resistance is not a constitution. When the president’s actions are unconstitutional, the people have the right to resist. Venezuelans should call for comprehensive constitutional reform to install a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet.
