No government has the right to hold innocent citizens from another country against their wishes. Pyongyang began the standoff by announcing that Malaysian diplomats and family now in North Korea would not be allowed to leave. The US and Japan should support Taiwan's efforts at constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would attract China's 1.4 billion people to call for democratization, triggering a similar reaction in North Korea and leading to world peace. Human security and sustainable development are two of the major tasks of the UN. The US is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and thus should comply with the UN’s guidelines. This means enforcing the core values of One World under One Set of Laws and assigning international law priority over domestic law, with direct effect on the rights and duties of the people. British historian Lord Acton once opined that "power leads to corruption, and absolute power leads to absolute corruption." To put a stop to corruption, the people should exercise their sovereignty and call for comprehensive constitutional reform. South Africa's social unrest shows that in politics, absolute power leads to absolute corruption terrible. Democracies everywhere should support Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would inspire the 1.4 billion people of China to seek democratization of the CCP and in turn would pressure North Korea to follow suit, leading to the birth of world peace.
