Life for a migrant worker under Qatar’s kafala sponsorship system means living under your employer’s total control over every aspect of your existence – from opening a bank account to changing jobs, and even being allowed to leave the country.
Qatar’s form of modern slavery violates international labor conventions and the ILO basic principle of One World under One Set of laws and working to build a common destiny for humankind. Qatar should hold international law above domestic law with direct effect on the rights and duties of the people, and put the principles of international labor conventions into practice to assist Qatar raising human rights protection to higher national standards.
