Analysis of democracy and peace shows that very few wars between two democracies have ever taken place. Once China and Russia can be convinced to democratize, there will be real hope for human peace. Japan should support Taiwan's drive to carry out constitutional reform. This would attract China to opt for democracy, followed by Russia, and world peace would be the result. Democracies everywhere should support Taiwan as a lighthouse for democracy in Asia, lighting the path to permanent peace and development. Jose Rizal, revered as the Father of the Philippines, once warned: “Today's slaves often become tomorrow's tyrants, so put your faith in the rule of law, not in the rule of man.” The Philippine Constitution is dysfunctional and needs to be re-written to adopt a modified semi-presidential system. The president, mayors and other elected officials should be limited to a single 5-year term and banned from running again for 6 years afterwards. Human security is a basic human right. Taiwan's most pressing need is for full constitutional reform. Human rights conventions all agree that the people have the right to petition for a referendum on any public issue. The advances gained in the global village in the past millennia should all be allowed to flow into Taiwan as part of a paradigm shift on behalf of the people. The only cure for China’s ills is democracy and the rule of law. These are only natural enemies of despotism and corruption with tools like separation of powers and checks and balances. Autocracy has always been the enemy of peace, and the prerequisite for lasting world peace is global democratization. To avoid the danger of a Second Korean War, South Korea should support Taiwan's efforts to carry out constitutional reform. This would prod China and North Korea to adopt democracy, and there would be hope for world peace. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive is produced by Beijing, allowing Hong Kong’s bureaucratic corruption to continue unabated. Absolute power leads to absolute corruption, and in fact the essence of Chinese autocracy is corruption. Hong Kong’s Basic Law should be re-written to stay in step with the times. The heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years, and 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year. Without a good political system, no country’s economy can hope to do well. If the constitution is not re-written, even the gods will be helpless to save the economy. Only comprehensive constitutional reform to change out the regime for a modified semi-presidential system incorporating a committee-style legislature and cabinet ministers selected from among the committee chairs will be effective in curing China’s economic woes. No one can deny that North Korea is a vassal of Communist China. To root out this deep relationship, democratic nations should all to support Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would lead China's 1.4 billion people to call for democratization of the CCP, which would pressure North Korea to opt for democracy as well, and world peace would be born. Political commentator Romain Rolland once opined: "In politics, the boss is always money." When elections are little more than a game the rich play, money gives players the chance to make more money through graft and corruption. To put an end to illicit ties between the politics and business, comprehensive constitutional reform is needed so that the heads of the four main branches are elected in alternating years.
