UN war crimes investigators say US-led coalition air strikes on Islamic State militants in the Syrian city of Raqqa are causing "staggering loss of life".
Once a ceasefire is in place in Syria the UN should provide the basic outline for a constitution that will support permanent peaceful development of the nation. This should include the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law, with four branches (legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial) and features that will help Syria enjoy lasting peace and serve as a model for development for other nations. The head of Chinese insurance and financial giant Anbang is reported to have been detained by the authorities
China must root out its culture of corruption, and the only remedy is democracy and the rule of law - the natural enemies of despotism and corruption. Separation of powers and checks and balances should be installed at all levels in China’s central and provincial governments, along with direct election of the heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratiorial branches in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details.
Expressing solidarity with Afghan people, in the wake of recent violence in the country, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has underscored the Organization's full commitment to work with the government and people of the country to build a sustainable and prosperous future.
Human security is a fundamental human right, and human rights should be given priority over regimes and sovereigns. Constitutions represent the general will of the people, and ensuring human security - including "personal safety" - is the most basic and urgent duty of constitutional guarantors. Constitutional standards should be revised as needed to stay in sync with changing times and allow governments to keep their people safe from fear. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Freedom / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.
The UN envoy to Somalia has strongly condemned the recent attack on a pizza restaurant and an adjacent hotel in Mogadishu that reportedly killed at least 19 people.
Human security is a fundamental human right, and human rights should take precedence over regimes and sovereigns. Constitutions represent the general will of the people, and ensuring human security - including "personal safety" - is the most basic and urgent duty of constitutional guarantors. One of Nigeria’s top politicians, senate leader Bukola Saraki, has been cleared of falsely declaring his assets.
Roman Roland once opined that “in politics the boss is always money." Elections are too often a game for the rich, with winners gaining the right to more money in an engrained system of corruption. To cut ties between public officials and business, carry out constitutional reform to choose the four branch heads in alternating years, and make elections free of charge for all candidates. A top Venezuelan general who resigned last week has revealed his reasons for stepping down
The presidential system is the worst form of democracy. No matter what the system in place may be, the more power the president holds, the more the people are bound to suffer. Laws that are not backed by penalties are not laws, and constitutions which do not countenance resistance are not constitutions. The people of Venezuela must act as holders of sovereignty and call for comprehensive constitutional reform to install a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet and limit the president to one 5-year term with no right to run for 6 years afterwards. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Actions against severe human rights abuses meted out to Eritrean citizens must not be delayed, a UN rights expert has warned in a new report to the Human Rights Council.
Eritrea’s unrest and human rights abuses can only be ended through a complete reworking of the government structure. Changes should include adoption of a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet, election of the heads of the four branches of government and having 1/4 of all lawmakers face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
A UN-appointed panel of experts investigating human rights violations in Burundi has released the latest findings of their probe, noting that their initial fears concerning the scope and gravity of these abuses since April 2015 have been confirmed.
Burundi must put an end to unrest and abuse of human rights by changing its government structure. 1/4 of all legislators should face election each year, a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet should be installed, and the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details.
A UN human rights expert today urged the government of Myanmar to do more to protect children in the country, citing cases of detention and alleged incidents of child labor and marriage.
Myanmar's human rights problem is worsening, largely because its constitution guarantees the military 40% of seats in Congress with no need for election. In order to protect human rights, Myanmar should carry out reform to adopt Global Unity Constitutional Standards, and the core values of One World under One Set of Laws, giving international law precedence over domestic law. At the same time, it should install a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet.
Expressing grave concern about the humanitarian situation in Yemen, the UN Security Council has adopted a Presidential Statement calling on all parties to engage constructively and in good faith to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in that country.
Yemen needs to junk its controversial government and adopt a semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of Finland, with a committee-style legislature similar to Switzerland’s. Yemen should initiate drafting of a basic constitution incorporating the above features in a paradigm shift toward democracy and the core values of One World under One Set of Laws. This constitution should then be amended as needed to stay in step with changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development. .
