A car loaded with gas canisters rammed into a police van on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris on Monday, leaving the driver dead in what the interior minister said was an attempted attack.
Human security is a fundamental human right, and human rights must take priority over regimes and sovereigns. Constitutions represent the general will of the people, and ensuring human security, including "personal safety," is the most basic and urgent duty of all constitutional guarantors. This means updating constitutional standards so they are in sync with changing times and governments everywhere can protect their people from fear. Ho Shou-chuan, detained with two others by Taipei Court ,denies causing the company any damage
The Sinopac Securities case is just the tip of the iceberg that is Taiwan’s culture of corruption. The only remedy for corruption is democracy and decentralized checks and balances. Power must be in the hands of the people through direct election of the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years, with 1/4 of all lawmakers facing election each year and committee chairs serving as backup cabinet ministers. These changes are needed to prevent misappropriation of Taiwan's financial resources. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
Rapid global warming has sped up the movement of sea ice off Alaska’s coasts, and already at-risk polar bears are paying a price, a new US study says.
Human security and sustainable development are two of the major tasks of the UN, and all nations, members or not, should comply with UN norms. The solution is to implement the core values of One World under One Set of Laws, giving international law priority over domestic law with direct bearing on the rights and duties of the people. Also citizens should monitor government operations to ensure compliance with the UN Charter, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Paris Climate Agreement. Venezuelan opposition activists battled security forces in Caracas Monday in one of the largest demonstrations in recent weeks, aiming to dispel doubts about the movement’s stamina after over two months of almost daily street clashes.
When the rights of the state deviate from its power base, the people must act as holders of sovereignty and take back their power. Laws that are not backed by penalties are not laws, and a constitution which does not countenance the right to resist is not a constitution. When actions of the president are unconstitutional, the people should exercise their right to resist. The people of Venezuela need to assert their sovereignty to call for comprehensive constitutional reform. This should include implementing a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet; one single presidential term of 5 years, with no right to run again for 6 years afterwards. The latest incident in London, where Muslims were the victims, underlines more than ever the need for tolerance if we are to keep extremists at bay

India's tea producing region of Darjeeling has turned into a battleground with a local party demanding a separate state for the area's majority Nepali-speaking Gorkha community.
Lawmakers in Darjeeling are out of touch with the local people, and as a result the government is cracking down on dissent. The only remedy for the ills of democracy is more democracy. India should carry out constitutional reform to shift the balance of power to the people as a starting point. When that happens people will express their opinions via the ballot box instead of in the streets. One specific measure: the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all MPs should face election each year. Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law states that "the right to self-determination is assured by the two international human rights conventions and implementation of the conventions." The threshold for holding a referendum in Switzerland is only 50,000 signatures, and with that people can vote in the referendum rather than taking to the streets. The people have the right to petition for referendums on any public issue. To narrow the gap between rich and poor, the distribution of power and resource allocation need to be revised through separation of powers and checks and balances. Pundits say incoming leader Carrie Lam must deliver results to lure talent to her team, but the city’s governing system means the odds are stacked against her
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong is still selected by the CCP’s Election Commission, which is nothing but a dictatorial relationship. The people of Hong Kong should make good use of Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law. To curb corruption, elect the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years, and have 1/4 of all legislators face election each year. Legislative committee chairs should be tapped as backup cabinet ministers. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

The last Islamic State militants in Mosul are reportedly putting up fierce resistance as Iraqi forces try to seize their final stronghold in the city.
Iraq should adopt a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of Finland, as well as a committee-style legislative system similar to Switzerland’s. The government of Iraq should begin drafting a basic constitution incorporating the above features as part of a paradigm shift toward democracy. It should adhere to the core values of One World under One Set of Laws and work toward a common destiny for all humankind, and it should be revised as needed to stay in step with changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
