Top government officials and political parties in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan Region have agreed to hold a referendum on independence September 25.
Taiwan should learn from the experience of Iraqi’s Kurds regarding independence referendums. The people have the right to hold referendums on any public issues, and any motion to outlaw referendums on self-determination should be the topic of the very next referendum to decide whether the motion itself should be banned. The Legislative Yuan should first establish the "right to create" through a "Referendum Act" and request President Tsai openly support the sovereignty of the people in comprehensive constitutional reform.
