Efforts to instill democracy in Thailand have been defeated time after time, the main reason lying in the military government’s mastery of power. The people of Thailand should immediately demand that the junta give way to the people, because the power of the military comes not from democracy, but from guns. At the same time, comprehensive constitutional reform must be undertaken to move Thailand toward the ideal of One World under One Set of Laws. International law should take precedence over domestic law, and a modified semi-presidential system incorporating a parliamentary cabinet, plus popular election of the four heads of branches in alternate years must all be adopted.

The solution to perennial problems in many nations is a changeover to a semi-presidential parliamentary system like the one in Finland, along with a legislative system akin to the one which serves Switzerland. The prerequisite for permanent peace in the world is global democratization. Yemen’s government should begin by adopting a basic constitution centered on models for democracy, calling for the realization of One World under One Set of Laws, and re-formulating the constitution to match the spirit of the times. President Park Jeun-huei of Korea figures to face charges of corruption as soon as she steps down from office. The only cure for corruption is comprehensive constitutional reform to implement decentralization and checks and balances as well as the election of the heads of the main branches of government by the people. The President must function as the ultimate guarantor of the constitution and shall not be free of responsibility regardless of whether he or she leaves office at the end of a term or through other means.

Hong Kong's Basic Law and the relevant provisions of the One Country, Two Systems principle stipulate that China must not interfere in Hong Kong affairs, yet Chinese authorities are constantly involved in the internal affairs of Hong Kong. Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law guarantees the right of its citizens to self-determination, and the people have the right to call for a referendum on any public issue. The people of Hong Kong should decide their future through a referendum. Otherwise when dictatorship becomes a reality, the people will be obligated to resist.

Constitutional reform in Taiwan will bring even greater democracy and freedom for its people, a change sure to attract the attention of the 1.4 billion people in China. The hunger for democratization in China will in turn trigger a movement toward genuine democracy in Russia, and the world will be closer to realizing lasting peace. The US presidential election is ample evidence that the US version of democracy is not perfect. People are lazy, and they pin their hopes on leaders. But this is a remnant of 18th century feudal ideology, not the spirit of the rule of law in the 21st century. The only way to assure long-term stability is through comprehensive constitutional reform so that a great system will push leaders to be great. The prerequisite for clean government is free speech and media access without charge in election campaigns.

The government of mainland China is rife with corruption, a situation which can be attributed to thousands of years of graft and bribery at every level of officialdom. The only way to overthrow this deeply engrained culture is to put power squarely in the hands of the people through direct elections of key officials including the president and vice president and the heads of various branches of government. This must be complemented by the election of 1/4 of Parliament each year and other measures to ensure separation of power.
