12 December is Constitution Day in Russia. Less than two months after the December 12, 1993, referendum that approved the new Constitution, however, tanks opened fire on government buildings, showing that most of the protections offered in the Constitution have not been implemented.
Russia is a permanent member of the UN and should not distort or abuse the spirit of the UN Charter and the UN Convention on Human Rights. Unfortunately, the Russian Constitution was re-written but never fully implemented, leading to today’s marking of Constitution Day as a black day on the calendar. Autocracy is the enemy of human freedom and security. The solution lies in handing political power to the people, checks and balances in the government and direct election of the heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches, as well as cost-free elections for candidates.
